I really resonated with this post! when I saw harry styles 3 years ago, I recorded so much that I felt like I hadn't actually seen the show properly. I regretted being on my phone so much and now that has spurred me to not use my phone at shows anymore. I take one pic or video and that's it. I want to be able to enjoy the moment, rather than trying to capture it.
Of the four concerts I've been at in my life, I've had the ""fortune"" of someone else recording some parts of the concert for me. Not the entire concert or set, mind you, just little parts to remember things, but otherwise, I've been able to actually experience the concerts and dance in them without any phone in front of my face to capture it.
i love that — it's like if there's going to be a high-production-value concern film... why am I using my shitty iphone 4 to record this?! let me just live in the moment!
Even though I'll only take my phone out once or twice during a set, this still gave me a lot to think about. I think nowadays I'm just as adamant about taking photos with friends at shows as I am taking a photo or vid of the performer because lately I've been thinking about the people I meet and relationships I build from the communal activity of the shared interest. Even recently there have been times where I've found myself engaged for a band's full set that I don't even think about taking my phone out. This has me honestly considering challenging myself with keeping my phone in my pocket for a whole show.
I love this, reminds me of my early festival days ~2010. Just used my phone to snap a couple pre-party outfit pics and look at the downloaded map & lineup. Then your phone was basically useless until the ride home. Ahhh the good days 🥲
I remember seeing Gregory Alan Isakov (brag) at a little sit-down venue in Portland Maine like 5 years ago and the guy in front of me was recording the whole thing on his iPhone. I had this exact thought: what are you filming this for? No one on the internet cares about that show. So I tried to sing to all the songs very loudly and badly to ruin it.

nothing is more devastating than watching Maroon 5 play the Songs About Jane live through the shittiest flip phone :')

I think having just the small bits and pieces of the show is enough! a reminder you were there but not trying to capture the full experience
