"TikTok has long been a way to turn my brain off. Who knew staring into the distance could do a better job?" — this is too real! one of my most successful tech habits been no tiktok before bed, and i've felt a shocking shift: random idea bursts before sleep and less anxious dreams!

I like this. I've always been a child of the internet and I also work in tech. I don't really want to give the internet up completely and go analog...I just want it to be less of a default action. Reclaiming tech, I like.

Too often is the whole 'tech consumption' thing discussed in black and white!

I got the e-mail for this RIGHT after shuffling around in bed, trying to decide whether or not to quit “bad” tech use (it 1:39 AM here, crazyyy) Anyways, I’ve decided to do this 75 Hard as well. I’m also quitting music completely for a month and after that month I’m quitting streaming and going iTunes only. Something about this calm feeling you only felt as a child brings me to tears every time, but it’s too late to be thinking about all of this 🫩🫩 amazing writing

so glad this resonates! I miss how carefree I felt as a child. Of course, with age comes responsibility... but I wonder if creating more boundaries between ourselves and the tech we use can help reorient and ground ourselves. Remember how we would lose track of time? How precious that was before the normalization of notifications started ruining our flows.

Sorry for the late reply, I was doing a full tech-detox up until my birthday (which was 26 minutes ago now!!) I once read an article that said that it's still 2009 outside if you shut off the Goddamn phone and they were totally right. For the first time in 10+ years I ate a meal without a video or music in the background. The noise of cars passing by, children playing outside; I think it's small things like this that ground us. Also, this article was what started this detox so I owe you a giant THANK YOU!!!

For everyone interested in reclaiming technology, I can highly recommend the book Digital minimalism by Cal Newport! Digital minimalism is a philosophy where you use your technology with purpose, in a way that it only adds value to your life. In short you first cut technology out and after a declutter period you can re-introduce it, but only on your own terms. The first half of the book explains where the philosophy came from and outlines it, and the second half is split up in different steps that guide you through the process itself of reclaiming your technology/technological devices!

Thanks for sharing! How do you turn your phone dumb every day at a certain time?
